APC - Smart UPS
We all know it, whether at home or in the office: a power cut is never good news. Especially where computers are concerned, power cuts can do a lot of damage, from incomplete or corrupted data records to devices that may not start at all. The chaos is complete, and lost data can become incredibly expensive in the server environment. That is why we recommend using one or more UPS units, i.e. uninterruptible power supplies, in every network.
How It Works and Why It Matters
The basic principle of a UPS is to supply power to devices that, in the event of a power cut, should not simply be cut off from the power. The UPS contains one or more batteries that take care of the power supply and are continuously charged to 100% whenever mains power is available. However, this battery charge is also limited.
For longer periods without power, the next function of the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) comes into play, provided it is equipped with a network management card. These devices can then also ensure a controlled shutdown of the connected hardware in order to avoid any loss of data.
Management Interface
We recommend using a Smart UPS with a UPS network management card. This gives you the ability to securely monitor and control an individual APC UPS via your web browser. Furthermore, this network card gives your Smart UPS the so-called PowerChute Network Shutdown function. This allows you to enable a controlled shutdown of your servers over the network.
Smart UPS with Lithium-Ion Batteries
One of APC's latest innovations is the Smart UPS equipped with lithium-ion batteries. As a result, the manufacturers achieve cost savings of up to 58% for you.
More Power, Savings and Greater Environmental Friendliness
This is made possible by the longer service life of the Smart UPS itself and also by the savings on regular battery replacement, which now only has to be carried out every 8-10 years. By comparison, conventional VRLA batteries have to be replaced every 3-5 years. Lithium-ion batteries therefore offer double the battery life, and with an efficiency of more than 96% when charging and discharging. On top of that, these batteries are considerably more environmentally friendly and also bring savings, namely in disposal costs.
